"For each acoustic guitar I hand-write the company name and date of manufacture inside on the soundboard beneath the bridge, toward the tailblock. They also have a label clearly visible through the soundhole. The electric guitars have a label underneath the neck pickup that includes the company name, date of manufacture and a serial number.

All of my guitars are hand-made by me and will include the company logo of an eagle's claw piercing a musical note (Freedom Indo Music) wither inlaid or hand carved on the headstock, either inlaid or hand-carved." [Source: Dumitru Manea, Manea Guitars, email 22/3/2008]

My guitars all dated the day they are prepared for lacquer and this becomes the serial number. For example, a guitar completed today would receive the serial number of 032408. Depending on the model it's written on different parts of the guitar under the lacquer and on Acoustics on the internal wood as well as the label."  [Source: Stephen Raphael Marchione, email 24/3/2008]

Marler Guitars circa 1985 to 2005

"Start date: The beginning manufacture date is hard to pinpoint. Mike Marler made his first electric guitar out of a toilet seat as a joke around 1977.
Approximately 1985 he started to get serious about making acoustic guitars and started numbering some of his guitars. He began accumulating so many around his house he started giving them away to his friends as he did not feel they were worthy of sale to the public.

At Ser. #25 (made in 1999 - which I own) he decided to go public. He started selling his work in 2000.
End Date: May 2005 upon Mike passing away.

All Marler guitars were made in Portales, NM where Mike lived his entire life. They were made at his home at first on his kitchen table and later in the shop that he built.

Most of his guitars were dated on an interior tag.
There really is no such thing as a used Marler. People just don't sell them and if they did the price would be astronomical. The last one sold was a demo unit that was out on consignment when Mike passed away.

Ironically that went to a man in Australia that paid $4000.00 and flew here to get it. One owner that had multiple Marler's traded another Marler owner.
Those are the only movements I know of.

I maintain a registry of Marler's here:
http://marlerguitars.com/new/dox/guild/registry.htm

"re electrics. ..the ‘Serial Number’ for the electric guitars can be found on the back of the headstock, can be difficult to see as the guitar gets older.  The first four numbers of a not too old electric represent the date of manufacture, the following numbers are where that guitar sits in the series." Matsumoku

1950s – 1987

Matsumoku began in Matsumoto, Japan, as a family owned woodworking business. After WWII, the Singer Corporation set up Singer Sewing Machine production in Nagoya and contracted Matsumoku to build cabinets. In 1951 Matsumoku became a partially owned subsidiary of Singer, Japan.
By the mid 1950s, Matsumoku ventured in guitar and violin production and set out to distinguished itself by producing high quality acoustic and electric archtop guitars. The Matsumoku name began appearing on neck bolt plates, headstocks, and sound hole labels in the late 70s.
Matsumoku produced guitars, or parts of guitars for the following brands
Guyatone, Greco, Yamaha, Aria, Univox, Westbury, Electra, Westone, Skylark, Vantage, Westminster, Cutler, Lyle, Fell, Washburn, Westone [Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsumoku ]

Some sites suggest Matsumoku was burnt down in the 80s.  According to Shiro Arai, however, Singer’s depression brought about the plant closure in 1987.   [Source:  Paul Alcantara, Guitar Buyer, November 2006 ]

McAlister Guitars

"I have been building guitars for 30 years, but my current business was started in 1996, following my exit from the Santa Cruz Guitar Company.

All of my guitars are dated on the label inside the box. In addition to this, I also hand write the date and serial number, as well as my signature, under the top (soundboard) in two locations....on the treble side of the sound hole and behind the bridge plate. These hand written dates and serial numbers can be seen with the use of a small mirror. I write it twice to avoid alteration of the numbers....the one behind the bridgeplate is nearly impossible to get to through the soundhole, but the one near the sound hole is for general identification and/or clarification."
