Andrés Domínguez |
current at 2010 |
Andrés Domínguez Guerrero, born
23rd March 1947, is one of Seville’s greatest builders. He was
born in San Miguel, a neighbourhood of Jerez de la Frontera
(Cadiz) with a rich tradition in Flamenco. From his early age,
Andrés was drawn to playing flamenco guitar. He played flamenco
guitar professionally for over 40 years until he retired. His
love and passion for the guitar eventually led him to building
guitars for over 35 years now. Already in In 1965, Andrés began
an apprenticeship with Manuel Ortega Sousa. Andrés was deeply
inspired by the design of Santos Hernandez. His natural gift and
special skills working with woods combined with his profound
knowledge and expertise as a professional flamenco guitarist,
formed the basis to become one of the most respected builders in
the regions of Seville. In 1979 he installed himself permanently
in “The Artisans House” in the beautiful neighbourhood of Triana
in Seville where he still works today. Andrés builds entirely by
hand using traditional construction techniques, his production
is limited to about 15 guitars a year. Andrés has participated
in many contests and international exhibitions, winning the best
recognitions a luthier can be granted. Many artists have passed
through his shop and play his instruments. Paco Cepero, Enrique
del Melchor, Manolo Franco, Nino de Pura, Jose Luis Postigo,
Ricardo Mino,Quique Paredes, Paco Fernandez and many more.

"I started business in 1995, and have remained a one-man shop,
building each guitar by hand for a specific client. I'm in
Portland OR, and build at most 10 instruments a year. I sign and
date (and name) each instrument both on the inside of the top
and on the label which is visible through the soundhole. I don't
use serial numbers, I name each instrument, but the names are
somewhat organized in that I make 5 or 6 under a name with
different initials, and am working my way backwards through the
alphabet. The prototype was Zoe, which I did not sell. Then I
built 5 or 6 guitars each under the names Yvette, Xera, Wynona,
Valerie, Ursula, Talia, Sarah, Rianne, Quinlan, Pamela, and
Niamh, and am now building Madelines. The names are only a very
rough indication of date, but again, the date is written on the
label.
The Sarah series were the first to include my Adjustable Neck
Angle System. That's about the only major feature that was
added; the double-cutaway and
pinless bridge, as well as the
spiral rosette and various trademark shapes like my headstock
and bridge, were there from the beginning.
The holes in the
label are for adjusting the neck angle, and the number and
placement of those holes has varied quite a bit, from six to
three to two to none, as I refined the adjustment mechanism.
From the Olivias on (Mid 2006) there are no holes in the label,
and the adjustment hole moves to the outside on the neck heel.
My web site is
www.DoolinGuitars.com.
I'm always happy to answer questions about my guitars for
potential buyers of used instruments." [Source: Mike Doolin,

family started violin making in 1890 and may not have dated or
put serial no's on any of their work up to 1950's
. I began in 1976 and dated all
including electrics, the system I have
is the number of the instrument ie. 1
to 2000 followed by a dot then the type no, so 455.76 for a
mandolin would be 455 instruments made so far and 76 of them
were mandolins,

I started in 1990. Made in
my own workshop, about 80m² size.
On
the inside of the top, there is written the date, when I closed
the body. From that date, it takes about 1 month, till the
instrument is finished. Its also written the number inside of
one year, so eg. 17/08 means the 17th instrument in 2008.
The first years, I
used a handmade label, but since about 15 years, I use my
business card also as label." [Source:

Dan Dubowski Guitars, Batlow, New South Wales Australia.
Following info from the internet archive 2002:
Dan Dubowski is
a self taught maker of fine quality, unique acoustic guitars and
Irish bouzoukis. Working from a home based workshop in the
southern N.S.W. town of Batlow, Dan currently builds 14-20
instruments per year.
Each instrument is handmade using the finest quality timbers
chosen from a small select range. When selecting each piece of
timber, careful consideration is given to resonating
characteristics, strength and wearing properties as well as a
unique and spectacular appearance.
All work is carried out in a humidity controlled environment.
When commissioning each instrument, Dan considers an
uncompromising level of playability and a high quality, rich,
balanced tone as the two factors of utmost importance. A great
deal of emphasis is also placed on creating a 'one of a kind',
unique and individual instrument of high level workmanship.
