A serial name and date of
production date are engraved inside every shell.
There is a badge history of sorts.
The first 15 drums were hand stamped. Very rare. Then came the
etched logo which was produced for maybe 2 years. Then the box
badge, about 1 year and then the current script badge."

DW
 |
Drum Workshop is an Oxnard,
California-based drum and hardware manufacturing company.
Founded in 1972 as a teaching
studio by founder Don Lombardi. Don with student (and current
Senior Executive Vice President) John Good, began a small drum
equipment sales operation to cover the facility's operation
costs.
The first-ever DW product was the
height-adjustable trap seat, which was envisioned by Don. The
demand became so great that, after accepting an offer to
purchase all of Camco's manufacturing equipment, the primary
focus of the DW operation became drum hardware manufacturing.
DW's Camco origins can still be seen on their drums today in
their unique round "turret" tuning lugs which were designed by
George H. Way and originally featured on George Way drums.

Dating Drum Workshop drums
Unless you have a 'born date'
stamped in black inside the drum shell, it is difficult. A
serial number will only give you an estimate. I have a pre birth
dating dw kit with keller shells and after emailing dw, they
could only estimate its date of manufacture as 'early 90's'. My
other dw kit has 'aug 2006' stamped inside the shells. [Source:
PJB, Harmony Central Forum, 29/4/2007]
My DW kit is from the same era. I
think the badge color/metal type can give you a hind at it's
age, but it's not exact by any means. I know my DW's have a
gold/brass badge with black writing. Prior to that I think they
had silver badges with black painted writing, but I could be
wrong. During the Keller era they only had the "kit/order"
number inside the shell of each drum, as well as the serial
number on the badge. Once they started making their own shells
they started with the born on date, and then things get much
easier. Or something to that affect. Hope that helps.
