Electro |
Info from ebay: - Up until 1965
Radio & Television Equipment Co and Electro String were
distributors and manufacturers of a range of musical items
including Rickenbacker. Similar to Fender and Gibson at the time
they had dealerships in various areas which precluded them
selling their wares to other stores in the area. Now to get
around it they rebadged the equipment under another name. Fender
- > White, Gibson - > Epiphone and Rickenbacker - > Electro.
Unlike now, these items were built on exactly the same
production lines as the main name items to the same standards.
Now in the case of the Electro
M-8E it gets even better, because there was a change between the
Rickenbacker M-8 and the Electro M-8E, they swapped the 6AV6
pre-amp in the Rickenbacker for a 12AX7 in the Epiphone. Did I
hear someone say Fender Tweed Champ – yep exactly the same valve
and speaker configuration. True point to point wiring, check out
the chassis shot. This is what vintage valve amp hounds rave
about. The circuit uses a 5Y3 rectifier, 12AX7 (7025) pre-amp
and a 6V6 power valve.

Emrad |
Emrad
were originally located in Littleton, the next town South from
Englewood, Colorado and their
principal product was a very nice and compact 100 watt guitar
amp, at least as compact as it could be with a JBL D130 inside.
: The original of this amp was built for jazz guitarist Johnny
Smith, who wanted a "flat response" amp instead of the built in
"smiley face" sound that he heard in Fender and Gibson amps of
the time.
: Emrad was pretty much a one man
company run by R.E. "Ev" Evans, who built a complete custom
backline for the band Sugarloaf ("Green Eyed Lady"), and a lot
of custom gear for the Dirt Band in the early 70s.
: He later moved the shop to an abandoned bowling
alley location in Englewood, and continued to do electronics
repairs until he retired.

Australian made speakers.
In 1960, an RCA engineer named
Victor Kay (Snr) moved to Sydney from Brazil and went to work
for AWA.
Import duties on imported speakers
at that time was around 45%, so Victor made his own 12-inch and
15-inch speakers in 1963 under the name of ‘Lafayette’.
Victor formed the ETONE company in
the late sixties to manufacture speakers. They still do to this
very day. [Source: Awesome article by

Evans
 |
This Evans Super Echo was found on
eBay Feb 2010. The seller thought it was Australian
however from one example I have found some if not all were made
in Japan. However from a
US forum there are suggestions that it looks like a Multivox
MX-312 0r 201.
Same knobs, printing (echo tone, etc.) and chassis.
The matter was clarified per: "I
can assure you without a doubt that Evans is a Japanese company,
and that all Evans and Multivox products were made in Japan. The
back panel on many of my Evans echoes (I own four distinct
models) clearly states “Evans Corporation (Tokyo, Japan)”. You
can check them out here:
www.estecho.com/gear_echos.php
The ‘Multivox’ brand name as found
in the US was basically a rebrand for foreign market. I don’t
think they ever built or designed anything, and I know for sure
that Evans built the Multivox MX-312 for them." [Source: J.F.

"Evans Custom Amplifiers started
manufacturing amps in 1962.
The amps are now made in
Burlington, NC and the company is owned by Scot Buffington.
Dating Evans Amplifiers
You can determine the date of
manufacture by the serial number.
From 1980 - 1994 they were
numbered with an 8000 designation. In 1980 they started
numbering the amps with 8000 and built 40-70 per year.
In 1994 Ed Buffington purchased
Evans Custom Amplifiers from Derrell Stephens, of Shreveport,
LA, who had bought it from Jim Evans, the founder, several years
before. The serial numbers started at 941023-A, designation
yymmdd-letter.
In 2000 the main
manufacturing facility moved from McLeansville, NC to
Burlington, NC and serial numbers started with 0001-1,
designation yyww-# (w = week). Serial numbers were usually
located on the back panel of the electronics metal work."
